Reporter brief

Low-load cycling with blood flow restriction did not improve mobility or quality of life in older adults compared to cycling alone in RCT.

This six-week, sham-controlled randomized trial compared twice-weekly low-load cycling with individualized blood flow restriction (BFR) versus sham BFR in community-dwelling adults over 70. The intervention group received cycling with thigh cuffs calibrated to each participant's limb occlusion pressure, while controls received identical cycling with fixed low sham cuff pressure. The study measured functional mobility (DEMMI), quality of life (SF-36), and secondary outcomes including strength, walking capacity, and safety parameters.
